Comparison notes.

A detailed comparison of GitHub Codespaces and Coder.

A dedicated Linux dev box

Codespaces ✓ · Coder ✓ · Prized ✓

Each codespace runs on its own VM. It stops after an idle timeout (30 minutes by default, up to 4 hours), and a stopped codespace is deleted after a retention period of up to 30 days. Coder workspaces run on compute you provision, so the machine is yours in the fullest sense. A Prized box is a persistent machine with a fixed shape that stays yours for as long as you subscribe.

Your own editor, terminal, SSH

Codespaces ✓ · Coder ✓ · Prized ✓

All three support VS Code, plain SSH, and a terminal. No gray area on this row.

Two-way file sync

Codespaces ✗ · Coder ✓ · Prized ✓

Coder Desktop shipped bidirectional file sync in 2025, so Coder earns the check. Codespaces edits happen in the remote container. You can move work through git, but there is no continuous local mirror of the working tree. Prized syncs the working tree both ways continuously, and the sync includes the .git directory itself.

Ports on localhost itself

Codespaces ✓ · Coder ✓ · Prized ✓

When you connect to a Codespace from VS Code, forwarded ports appear on your laptop’s localhost, so Codespaces earns the check inside an editor session. Coder forwards workspace ports to localhost on your laptop when you run coder port-forward or ssh -L, and Coder Connect makes every port reachable at workspace-name.coder:PORT. Prized mirrors the ports the box opens, 3000 to 9999 by default, straight to localhost on your laptop, with no editor session or VPN required. Two ports in that range stay off: the agent’s own port 7377 always, and 5900 unless you turn it on.

Fully managed, nothing to host

Codespaces ✓ · Coder ✗ · Prized ✓

GitHub runs Codespaces end to end. Coder is self hosted by design. You run the control plane, the database, the provisioners, and the upgrade path on your own infrastructure, and there is no hosted version. That is a feature for air-gapped deployments, and a cost for everyone else. Prized is a hosted service. There is nothing to operate.

No platform team required

Codespaces ✓ · Coder ✗ · Prized ✓

Codespaces starts from a devcontainer file, so it earns the check. Coder’s first deploy is genuinely quick, and reviewers say so. The cross is for what comes after. Independent reviews describe heavy ongoing operations, Kubernetes, Terraform templates, and constant tuning, which in practice means a platform team. Prized is a CLI and a signup, not an ops project.
